Laetitia Hohenberg

Yesterday, I went to the opening of Laetitia Hohenberg‘s exhibition, on her workshop 2 rue Edouard Vasseur, Métro Pierre et Marie Curie, line 7, in the south of Paris. This event was organized by Laetitia and her family, gathering artists, collectors, musicians, friends and people like me… Laetitia was showing her paintings, after long, her last exhibition had been in 2007 ! The paintings were not finished when I sought it for the first time, in september 2011. On that occasion, Laetitia told me some differences between United States and France for art practice. Yesterday I understood something she told me about the sense of “interiority” that she can feel in France and not in United States. I don’t know if the possibility of this interiority could be really relative to France —or other particular country— but it’s sure that Laetitia’s maturity had a big part of influence on that. By maturity I mean the conscience she had about the moment, the place and the way to show her work, which is, in my opinion, the main condition when you want that something really happens. When the musicians she guested began their performance, I didn’t dance in spite of myself, but people were more and more excited and concerned by the situation. The encounter between funk music and Laetitita’s paintings was brilliant and left a deeply mark on me. Surely, the word interiority had a strong link with space, but is not about to be outside or inside, but about the feeling you have when you’re really inside something. Interiority is an indestructible harmony which has the potential to create symbols. And I think Laetitia prooved yesterday that she knows how to create, recreate and transform interiority in her work. In other words, she knows how to create symbols. A last example is the message she sent to advice me about her show “save z Date 19 jan for my show. More info to follow. From a mountain top in California with internet :)”
